Ice Dams
What They Are - Ice dams are accumulations of ice and snow at the eaves of house roofs.
What Causes It - They are caused by a loss of heat from the living space of a house. The heat melts the snow higher up on the roof, and the water trickles down to the roof's eaves, which are cooler and not affected by the heat loss. Here, the water re-freezes and creates this build-up of ice. The ice dams block this flow of melted snow and cause the water to back up under the roofing and into the house, causing damage to paint, paneling and drywall.
